End to Peace and Beginning of War

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Ah yes, the early morning news: Bomb in Buttala 23 killed, 67 injured, another bomb to follow this topped off with some gunfire and the president of SL has "taken measures to assist those in need in this area"

Lovely isn't it? You wake up in the morning, listen to the Ghastly stories which is probably "Music to most of our ears" because we are apparently "WINNING THE WAR" and it will all "END BY MID 2008".

No, but really......WHO are we fooling? Does NO ONE in this country understand the FUTILITY of WAR?
Each side blames the other, and apparently (according to each side) they are winning. WHO is winning? WHAT is happening? How are we to know? Do we SEE what is going on? We believe what we HEAR! How Marvelous! And to see, we have a literacy rate 90 something percent. Yet, we don't have the BRAINS to realize what is really happening here.

Yes, we are killing the LTTE soldiers.....does that mean that they are not killing us? The war which has been happening for the last 30 years is going to end in 6 months? You really think so?

If anyone of you has watched Kingdom (WARNING: SPOILER CONTENT- do not read if you have not watched the Kingdom) and remember the last part of it..... You will realize WHAT I am talking about. The main terrorist in the movie whispered to his grandson before his death " We will KILL THEM ALL" and at the beginning of the film, the FBI dude says the same about the Terrorist. The IRONY of it: Both parties fail to achieve this objective.

Yes, say we killed off all of the LTTE by mid 2008. Do you really think that'll be the end of it? There are thousands of LTTE supporters who believe in their "Cause". Will they not continue their fight?

Rhetorical Questions really do amuse me......... :|

Well first of all the reason the LTTE has so many supporters is not just because sri lankan tamils are spread all over the globe but also due to the riots in the 80's.
IMO that was the biggest mistake we made.
"we will kill them all"
That's what they were trying to do, but they were killing the wrong people. Even now they're calling the estate workers LTTE supporters.
Who wouldn't support the LTTE after the 80's riots?
The LTTE wanted power over a tamil area, I don't see anything wrong in that but their approach is certainly questionable. Terrorism is not the right approach.
The arrogance and ignorance of the sinhalese showed most when they conducted these riots.
This was their biggest mistake and what brought LTTE so much support, power and will.
And this is what made the tamils lose trust in the sinhalese.
It's all false assumptions.
and now this is where we are.
The LTTE are killing innocent people just like the sinhalese killed innocent tamils.
Black July is being repeated the other way around and spread out over years...
Until they get what they want... they will not stop.
Our only choice is to comply, if we are to cease the bloodshed.
But the hate & the greed will never subside.

The best state we've been in in these past few years were probably the years we had some sibilance of a ceasefire. But now that that's gone. Bloodshed is all we can expect. This will go on until we reduce them to nothing.
But how long will that last?
Not long.
Soon there will be a new LTTE
probably stronger than ever...

well that's just my opinion
my thought...
excuse the blabbering :)
but yeah...
just thought I'd express my views on this topic :)

Yeah, I agree with you stfallen,
but when you say SINHALESE, you are generalizing. See, it were the radicals that created the riots during the 80s.

My dad had so many tamils under his roof and he helped them to get away from all the troubles. This is just one example of goodwill.

But seriously, this is 2008. over 2 decades have passed and new generations have been created. Yes, some radical sinhalese indeed created this mess, killed tamils. Now what is happening is vice versa.

But why can't we put it all in the past? Why can't we forget our differences and unite?

It's all an illusion....this war is just a diplomatic term for money making

we can't put it aside because they still don't have what they want...
we have to compromise...
and I didn't put sinhalese in capitals :P
and the only reason I generalised there is because there are a lot of people generalising the tamils
and even muslims!
it's all consequences taking place...
there will always be generalisations, assumptions, false accusations and stereotypes...
that's just the way we humans are...
and we are the only ones who can change that...
and yet we don't.

I am afraid that the constant barrage of bloodthirsty war propaganda on State TV is going to make a permanent change in the psyche of Sri Lankans. We are likely to become a more intolerant aggressive people.
