The New Year Post

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Alright, fine! I'm a few days late, but it was made on New Year's day...HONEST! *evil grin*

I was just reading up on our Avurudu Festival and the UPS started to wail. Yes folks, we had a LONG power cut on the day of New Year Celebrations. And that was how we started off the day. (Excellent timing LECO!)

Then when the power finally came on after around 3 hours, I checked up on the situation of the country. Apparently we are winning the war that has been going on for over 2 decades now. Who states this? The government of course! And this is while the LTTE states otherwise, mind you!

"Although we are having some difficulties in the country, the economy of the country is improving" states the government. Inflation rates are skyrocketing, New Rice prices are beyond Rs. 90 per kilo and bread which could be easily purchased by the common man is now becoming a luxury. (Some Prices are stated below)

Maalu Paan (fish bun) costs Rs.25 in bakeries and ranges from Rs.35 onwards in pastry shops.

Prima Brown Bread costs Rs. 105 per 540 gramme loaf.

Finnagle White Sandwich Bread weighing 500 grammes costs Rs.85.

Finnagle kurakkan enriched diet bread costs Rs.66 for a small pack and Rs.103 for a 430 gramme loaf.

And that's not all, there's a whole list of brands and food products who wish to increase their prices after avurudu; this includes petrol/diesel prices. (Yes, AGAIN!!)

But, the government harps on the fact that this shall be one of the best years ever. Let's wait and see then shall we?

Oh! And Oba Samata Subha Nawa Wasarak Weva! *rolls eyes*

For the Brat.....

A sister can be seen as someone who is both ourselves and very much not ourselves—a special kind of double. -Toni Morrison

5-6 years ago…..

Definition of younger sister: (Use multiple choices of words) Unpleasant child, Little Horror, Little Monster, Brat, Pain in the rear

At one point of my life, I thought we would probably never get along. I mean, we had absolutely NOTHING in common. All we did was quarrel, pull hairs off our scalps, and try and injure each other as much as possible. I mostly blamed our five year age gap for this episode. She was an insignificant little horror trying to mess up my teenage years, always playing pranks on my friends, eavesdropping on our gossip and telling tales to my mother.

We would spend hours engaging in name-calling (with the use of our diverse profane lingo), physically hurting each other (ending up bruised and battered), and trying to out-do each other in every possible event/incident, and finally when we were tired we would just scream at the top of our lungs simultaneously, cover up our ears and continue the name-calling until we reached our own separate paths (the paths to our rooms of course) and finally slam the doors deliberately. Then we would celebrate silently behind closed doors.

The Present

“In the cookies of life, sisters are the chocolate chips.” ~Author Unknown

Definition of younger sister: Imperfect yet tolerable teenager, Flawed, yet passable sibling

The brat is now in her teens.

Although these petty arguments still come about infrequently, our relationship has evolved from its primitiveness into something more mature and beautiful; something I wouldn’t have dreamt of taking place. We now communicate in a civilized manner rather than jump at each other’s throats, since we have matured and now have things in common; boys, bitchy colleagues, clothes, parties make-up, exams, annoying parents etc. We now know that we are of the same kind, just a few years apart, and that if we want to succeed and rebel against our enemy and to achieve our goals (as mentioned in the things we have in common), we should work together rather than against each other.

So instead of name-calling, eavesdropping and telling tales to parents about each other, now we gossip, tell tales to each other about bitchy colleagues, mock them and destroy their vanity. Instead of physically and mentally hurting each other, we carry it out on our enemies and boys we think are worthless. *HALO SHINES* Instead of trying to out-do each other, we out-do the enemies (including parents) with the help of togetherness.

The Future

“Sisters is probably the most competitive relationship within the family, but once the sisters are grown, it becomes the strongest relationship.” ~Margaret Mead

Definition of younger sister: One who shares fond childhood memories, hopes, promises and dreams for the future. A woman who is greatly appreciated, dearly loved and forever connected by heart strings.

I cannot assure anyone what the future holds for us. But if we do survive the cruelty of this world and live another decade or two, I truly believe that I will find a long-lost best friend in my sister. I believe that we will become inseparable with the growth of our relationship and that we will indeed be connected by heart strings.

--------------------------♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥----------------------------

I might not be the most open and emotional of sisters but I want you to know that no matter how much people hurt you, physically, mentally or even just verbally, I will always be there to shield you from everything. Just remember that nothing is more important in life than your own happiness. No matter who or what is in your life, and no matter how important they are to you, if they do no make you happy and instead disappoint you, they are not worthy to be in your life in the first place.

Life is sweet young one, or at least, I will make sure it will be so for you…

I love you!

Hypocrites and the degeneration of mankind

Behold the turtle, He only makes progress when he sticks his neck out - James Bryant Conant

The sea was rough today. The waves were crashing onto children and their sandcastles, dogs with their play items, and not forgetting the tiny crabs and sea shells...

With it arrived the turtle.

The massive creature crept across the beach waddling through mounds of sand which were mahoosive obstacles for this tired creature. After a great struggle, he gave up. He gave up, and spread himself amongst the rubble on the beach.

Crows were circling around it, dogs were barking and trying to attack, but not a sign of movement from this glorious creature.

I watched it all from afar.

I felt proud to have seen this majestic being relaxing on the beach and not bothered by anything or anyone. I felt ashamed of how I am moved by what others think about me or what others do to intimidate me...and with this thought I approached it..

That was when I realized.

It was dying.
It couldn't be strained anymore. Eyes were full of pain and sides streaked with blood. This was the moment where it all ended.. I couldn't bear to watch. It was too painful for me to see a turtle who could to live for hundreds of years more was at its deathbed right in front of me.

A tear ran down my cheek.

And with that it had its last breath. It was over, nothing more could be done here.
The wounds were already infected and the stench was attracting the loathsome houseflies.

I turned around and faced the ocean

That was when I heard the men speak. "Ikmanata muge katta gaththa nung hari" (Quick, let's get its shell) Why is everything in this world tainted with greed? Every moment is exploited and is regarded as an opportunity? Why not let the turtle be? Let it decay into the ocean where it was born and raised...Let it once again be a part of the circle of life? But no, cruelty in mankind would make them rip the creature apart, use the flesh as meat and shell as decorations.

What evil did that turtle do to deserve such a fate? Has it ever harmed any one of us? This is the irony of life as they call it. The best part is how we are able to live with it all and walk away as if nothing is erroneous.

I am the hypocrite who passed those men and walked towards to horizon.

Every child is special

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

"Akki, you SO have to watch this!" The next thing I know is, I'm being dragged in front of the TV to watch a Hindi Film. I like Hindi films...I like to watch them when I have absolutely nothing better to do because most of them are very predictable.

So, as I sat on the sofa to witness another soppy hindi film, I thought to myself NEVER to succumb to my sister's wishes ever again. But to be honest, it was one of the best films I had watched! The plot was brilliant and not a cliche (like many other hindi films)

From the beginning of the film till the end, I was mesmerized. None of the scenes were predictable. It brought out the ignorance of most people when it comes to children with special needs. Most parents are oblivious to Autism, Dyslexia and other such problems and confuse them with the child's laziness to work or "ATTITUDE" as they call it.

Ishaan, the protagonist is notably a child with special needs. This is overlooked by his parents because he does not look abnormal. His inability to read and write is, in his parents' eyes, merely a "STUBBORN ATTITUDE TOWARDS SCHOOL WORK" What they fail to realize is the pattern of his mistakes which relates to Dyslexia.

Later it is revealed that Ishaan has above average intelligence. Aamir Khan uses comparisons with Thomas Alva Edison, Albert Einstein etc to show the audience that even children with special needs can turn out to be World Famous.

If you ever come across "Taare Zameen Par" make sure that you watch it. Moving and very touching, it'll change your perspectives on life VERY subtly!

End to Peace and Beginning of War

Ah yes, the early morning news: Bomb in Buttala 23 killed, 67 injured, another bomb to follow this topped off with some gunfire and the president of SL has "taken measures to assist those in need in this area"

Lovely isn't it? You wake up in the morning, listen to the Ghastly stories which is probably "Music to most of our ears" because we are apparently "WINNING THE WAR" and it will all "END BY MID 2008".

No, but really......WHO are we fooling? Does NO ONE in this country understand the FUTILITY of WAR?
Each side blames the other, and apparently (according to each side) they are winning. WHO is winning? WHAT is happening? How are we to know? Do we SEE what is going on? We believe what we HEAR! How Marvelous! And to see, we have a literacy rate 90 something percent. Yet, we don't have the BRAINS to realize what is really happening here.

Yes, we are killing the LTTE soldiers.....does that mean that they are not killing us? The war which has been happening for the last 30 years is going to end in 6 months? You really think so?

If anyone of you has watched Kingdom (WARNING: SPOILER CONTENT- do not read if you have not watched the Kingdom) and remember the last part of it..... You will realize WHAT I am talking about. The main terrorist in the movie whispered to his grandson before his death " We will KILL THEM ALL" and at the beginning of the film, the FBI dude says the same about the Terrorist. The IRONY of it: Both parties fail to achieve this objective.

Yes, say we killed off all of the LTTE by mid 2008. Do you really think that'll be the end of it? There are thousands of LTTE supporters who believe in their "Cause". Will they not continue their fight?

Rhetorical Questions really do amuse me......... :|

A new beginning???

Friday, January 04, 2008

I highly doubt it. Sorry for being such a cynic, but 2008 seems worse than ever in Sri Lanka. During the 1st week itself there were shootings and bombings not too mention price hikes.

Yesterday we went out to have lunch with a couple of buddies.... and we realized that out of what we ate, we gave like a quarter of the money to the bloody government. For what? Continue the war which is (ACCORDING TO THOSE BIASED IDIOTS) going to end soon.
Wake up and smell reality people! This is a guerrilla war you're talking about! And SAY we won this war by hook or by crook, what is the guarantee that this whole so called "Ethnic Situation" won't rise again?

Oh well, everything seems so expensive nowadays, it's a headache when planning an outing. The hypocrisy is that while everyone else is suffering and paying HUGE taxes, the hundreds of ministers are enjoying away...

First of all, if MR is SO sure of winning this war, the first thing he should do is cut additional costs of all ministers..we seem to be paying taxes NOT for the war to progress but to fatten our ministers as well as himself and his family.

I really want to go on about this topic, but I will leave it for tomorrow as I have to jet off.. GRRRR!
